We are proud to celebrate the leadership of Chairperson Abdullahi Adeid, who represented the YALI Somalia Alumni Chapter at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

At COP29, Chairperson Abdullahi Adeid played a remarkable role in showcasing the power of Somali youth leadership on the global stage. He moderated a high-level panel at the GAD Pavilion on “YALI Alumni Driving Change, Impact, and Innovation,” bringing together inspiring youth leaders from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia. The discussion highlighted how young people across East Africa are leading with solutions, innovation, and resilience to address the climate crisis.

On the sidelines, Chairperson Abdullahi Adeid also engaged in a key dialogue with Ahmed Amidihun, Regional Program Manager for East Africa at ICPAC, exploring how Somali youth can contribute to Anticipatory Action—leveraging climate prediction and data to strengthen disaster preparedness and protect communities before crises occur. This exchange reinforced the importance of youth-led, data-driven solutions in building a more resilient East Africa.

In addition, at the FAO Somalia Pavilion, he contributed to conversations on climate adaptation, financing, and resilient food systems, emphasizing the role of youth-led innovation in climate-informed agriculture. His participation showcased how Somali youth are not only part of the conversation but also shaping the future of climate resilience and sustainable development.

Chairperson Abdullahi Adeid’s presence at COP29 is a powerful reminder that Somali youth are leading, innovating, and driving change—locally, regionally, and globally.
